5.0 out of 5 stars A "Can't Put It Down" ThrillerOctober 28, 2012

This review is from: Quiet Ops (Paperback)
As a long time avid follower of mysteries both in books and on TV (I own a complete DVD collection of every episode of the Inspector Morse TV series ever produced, for example) I am pleased to report that Quiet Ops, written by L. J. Martin and Bob Burton, is an exciting and entertaining read. The hero and owner of Quiet Ops, Mr. Brad "Bulldog" Bennedict, is a former Marine commando and Iraq veteran who is in the business of solving delicate problems for rich people. The clientele needs to be rich people because Bulldog's fees are high, and rich people often have intricate problems, the solution of which puts Bennedict and his associates in dangerous, sometimes life-threatening situations.

Bulldog reminds me of Travis McGee, the hero in a series of mystery books I used to read years ago by the author John D MacDonald. Both were tough and fearless but they both had a strong moral code in terms of right and wrong as well as a soft side down deep. Bulldog is flashier than Travis McGee and he uses all the latest technologies and equipment to give him an advantage in his numerous risky endeavors. He has a number of friends and associates he hires for his various jobs, including a 350 pound Samoan called Cocoa and another former Marine and Iraq veteran nicknamed T-Rex, and they are all just as fearless, resourceful and tough as he is. Bulldog lives near Santa Barbara, California, but he has an office associate in Florida named Monique St. Marmont, who is an exceptionally attractive woman, but who fits in with the tough guys with no problem. These and other characters in the novel are particularly compelling people.

The adventures undertaken by this group were exciting, and I found myself not wanting to stop reading in order to see what happened next. This is one of the most entertaining novels I have read in some time. I won't go into any story details in order to preserve the surprise and suspense, but there are plenty of both.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you have time to read this book, you will not put it down once you get startedOctober 8, 2012
This review is from: Quiet Ops (Paperback)
When your business is fixing other people's problems, it tends to create difficulties in your own life. Brad "Bulldog" Benedict is the best in the correction of these problems but he may be in too deep with the latest case. Brad calls in all his best cohorts and even a few former enemies to help with rescuing two women caught up in something they cannot seem to escape. Brad has the ability to tweet the system to make the outcome turn his way yet this case is dogging him because nothing is falling into place as planned.

Having great friends makes the case happen but the enemies seem to want to set the night on fire with revenge. Brad is trying to figure out who is working with him as much as against him. The thought that it might be the man who hired him is frightening even to a former Marine.

This is one wild and fantastic read you should be prepared to take on and be mesmerized by from cover-to-cover. Every character is well written with realistic dialogue, the storyline compliments every page with fascinating interaction between every person in the book. The plot is fast paced and this read is complete package of delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Action Packed Parallel UniverseOctober 19, 2012

This review is from: Quiet Ops (Paperback)
Quiet Ops is an exciting, can't put it down novel. Bob Burton's attention to detail about Santa Barbara and Palm Beach brings the reader onto the scene and into the local haunts of both towns. His characters bring you into a world that is a parallel universe to the normal everyday existence that most people live.

The fast pace, quick turns and surprising outcomes are a hallmark of Mr. Burton's writing style and stories. In a nutshell his books take you away.

If Quiet Ops existed and I had a problem outside or inside the law, I would not hesitate to hire him and his group.

Quiet Ops is a LOUD SUCCESS!!!

Quiet Ops is an exciting, non stop action thriller with so many interesting characters. The author's attention to detail about Santa Barbara and Palm Beach is amazing and the reader gets the real deal local hangouts of both cities. The characters bring you into a world that is way different than mine and probably yours as well.

The writing style and quick turns in the dialog and storyline are intriguing to say the least. This is another winner. Great entertainment and suspense throughout. What a fantastic read!

I enjoy action adventure, thriller, and mystery novels. Add those to the private investigator theme and it provided a great read. It's interesting how Brad "Bulldog" Benedict finds himself in the middle of several investigations and conflicts at the same time. Having a great support system and a thick skin certainly added to his success. Definitely a good read. My compliments to L. J. Martin.

This is a fast read. The good guys out-fight, out-shoot, and out-smart the bad guys. Similar to a Louis L'Amour story only the good guy has accomplices. You won't mistake this for great literature, but it's a fast, entertaining read that's hard to put down.
